So - you have a super exciting, awesome new business venture to get off the ground, and you're thinking about hiring a copywriter. (Well, okay then - hit us up!)
If you're new to business, you might not be sure if you're ready to involve other humans in your idea, and hand over actual money and whatnot. We get it. Investing in a creative professional - whether it's a writer, designer, website geek, stylist or whatever - might be a daunting move when you're just starting out. You might be inexperienced with this kind of thing. Cash is possibly tight.
If a pro is asking you to throw them upwards of a hundred or a thousand dollars or more, how can you be sure you're wringing the best possible value out of what you paid for?
And if you're just starting out, how do you know when it's time to hire a pro to help?
If you jump in and hire a creative professional before you're ready, it's likely you'll have a messy, mutually frustrating experience, and end up paying a lot for branding that doesn't truly reflect your business. WOAH NO.
Don't panic - we've given it some thought, and come up with a little bit of homework for you to do before you hire. If you work through this (very basic) stuff you'll feel wayyy more confident about briefing a creative and getting the results your business deserves.
First, two big reasons you need to do the homework before you hire a copywriter or other creative professional:
1.If you’re not ready, you won’t get as much bang for your buck.
The more work you've done on your own brand before you come to us, the deeper we can go during the time we have together. The deeper we go, the more incredibly ah-mazing your final copy will be.
You don’t have to know much about marketing strategy, branding jargon or even what a brand story is. You just have to know your business – and nobody knows it better than you do. If you want maximum value for the dollars you pay us, be a star client and bring along some basic details, dreams and feeling words about your products and services to get us started.
If you haven’t thought much about the kind of values that will drive your business, and the type of image you want to project to your dream clients, we’ll have to start from scratch together. That’s fine – we love to do that work with you. But if we ask “So, what does your business do?” and you give us a blank look, we’ll be forced to spend our time together helping you to articulate the basics of your business story, with less time to dive into your personality and soak up your vibe.
Which leads us to the second reason to do your homework before you hire…
2. If you’re not ready, you will annoy your creative professional.
Guys, it’s time for some #realtalk. On behalf of the creative community, we’re telling you straight – GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER BEFORE YOU BOOK YOUR CREATIVE PRO. Do not turn up to your graphic designer with a logo idea drawn on a napkin and no thought given to how it reflects your brand story. Do not go to your web designer without a basic outline of the information you need your website to convey. Don’t show up to your copywriter with no clue what specific services you will provide or who you want to market to!
Please don't make us sort through the handbag of your mind and pick the key points about your business out of all the old receipts, random notes and bits of fluff in there. We'll get annoyed, we'll take longer, and it will be harder for us to give you awesome results.
You definitely don’t need to have your brand, bio and voice all nailed down – that's our job. But doing a little bit of prep before you hire us will save you heaps of money, give us the confidence to nail your copy first time, and foster so much love between you and us.
So we made you a thing.
