The mobile office is a reality for us, and our favourite place to work is in a cafe. It’s not easy to find a cafe that’s great for work, though - ideally it will be low-noise, temperature controlled, equipped with wifi and power points, have comfortable seating with space for a laptop on the table, and the coffee has to be on point.
If that sounds like a lot to ask, it is - but we’ve done the legwork and discovered the best cafe spots for getting work done in Brisbane.
Black Sheep Coffee, Woolloongabba
Black Sheep Coffee is where we hold our creative writers group; you’ll find us there most weeks at the communal table, sucking down caffeine and pretending to work on our laptops. It’s puppy friendly, has power points under the window seating handy for charging your laptop, and offers an array of superb coffee options served in adorable off-kilter ceramics. Bonus: Black Sheep also boasts The Best Cafe Toilet in Brisbane, edging out the bathrooms at The Tiller and Felix for Goodness by virtue of its individual fluffy hand towels.
Day Made, Woolloongabba
When Brisbane temperatures soar above 30 degrees celsius (which is, oh, most days between September and March), we're driven to seek out an air-conditioned alternative to Black Sheep. Enter Day Made, one of the sassiest little coffee shops south of the river - think poppy pastels, peppy signage, and a mix of novelty and serious coffee paraphernalia for sale. The huge island bench is the perfect platform for meetings or extended writing sessions, but beware - there are no convenient power points, so charge up before you go.
Atticus Finch, Paddington
Atticus Finch makes the list largely because of their $5 bottomless filter coffee. Nothing fuels a long session of creative greatness like being able to flick your finger at the waiter and get a caffeine refill ANY OLD TIME YOU WANT. As well as having wifi (a must) Atticus Finch is also super dog friendly (a bonus). Like, it serves dog beer, a non-alcoholic brew for puppers. For reals.
The Menagerie, Kelvin Grove
Located in the urban village right next to QUT, The Menagerie is full of students lingering to use the free internet - so nobody will mind you nursing a real-chocolate hot chocolate and doing the same. The seating options are prolific, if wonky, the coffee offerings are quirky and named after the staff, and the Menage becomes a bar come twilight. The best.
The Scratch, Milton
Okay, we know it’s not technically a cafe (in that it serves neither coffee nor, ahem, food) but The Scratch does have a super chill atmosphere, air conditioning and free wifi. Turn a client meeting into knockoff drinks by taking advantage of special prices on local beers from 4-6pm every weekday - we’ve definitely done it. We’ve also whiled away many a comfortable hour writing beer-imbued copy in this den of dodgy couches and peanut shells. Oh yeah - they have free peanuts. In shells.
On any given day you’ll find us larking - sorry, working - around our beloved city in coffee shops (and occasionally bars). Keep up with what we’re drinking on instagram.
